In addition to cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, tannin, and silk, nature provides a wealth of biodegradable resources. These can be converted into high-performance, multipurpose materials. Yet, cellulose is predominantly used for paper production, whereas lignin and hemicellulose remain underutilized to a significant degree. Our laboratory investigates the structure-property relationships of bio-derived materials, as well as their advanced functionalization, processing, characterization, and design strategies. Our primary concentration is the creation of high-performance, multifunctional materials from bio-derived resources or by utilizing bio-inspired strategies. We are investigating the connection between the material structure, performance, and potential applications of biodegradable, environmentally favorable materials.
